our own periodic table is a guide and graph to the world's most basic elements. that is what i want to lay down for Galaxy City here, her barest elements of geography, history and culture.
GEOGRAPHY
GC's physical reality is sort of a fun house mirror of ours. it's mostly the same but with some things noticeably twisted out of the norm. due to the Planet's (for lack of a better term right now) unique origin, most of it doesn't technically exist. but we'll discuss that in the history segment. the part that is quantifiable, however, revolves around the central city called, you guessed it, Galaxy City. the city itself is stationed around a towering monolithic skyscraper with an enormous, undying flame atop it. this building is called "Ain's Torch" or "Ainslight" by the epistemic and spiritual traditions of the city, respectively. but to the majority of the population, it is known simply as "The Candle" which is where this very publication derives its title. around the candle is the main metropolitan area which is a rough crescent-shape in design to accommodate the quasi-coastal placement of the place. a bit north of GC is the bay area of the city which is connected to the Ocean (as yet unnamed). to the West/ SW area are the hinterlands and wilderness as bordered on the northeastern most side by a mountain range which also borders the ocean.
Zooming out, we can set ourselves upon the doctor moon. a technological marvel constructed by the inhabitants of GC in order to maintain a semblance of untouchable infrastructure and data/ information transfer and protection as well to provide some normalcy for the naturalized citizens of the realm, as Galaxy City Planet doesn't have any natural celestial bodies.
Zooming in and in again we move past the doctor moon, past the perceived atmosphere, in deeper than the compass rose map view and into a more close-up street map view of the city. in the southwest corner of the vaguely crescent-like L shape of the city is the monument quarter. its a sort of borough full of massive statues and galleries and gardens and sculptures, walkways, arches, etc. one of the few actual buildings in the area is one of the most important to the city: the Center for Extra-Human Rehabilitation and Advocacy (CEHRA pronounced 'sara' colloquially) the center is part Arkham, part brain-trust, with a dash of salvation army and a helping of camp davey to boot. it's where extra-humans go (or are sent) for rehab rather than imprisonment (which is practically illegal given the city's, again, unique story), it's also a research center for extra human abilities and evolution as well as the evolution of the city's fledgling culture and of exploration and documentation of the planet's opaque zones. the center and the surrounding properties are also home to some of the most naturally beautiful and artistically endowed areas, making it a common law DMZ where anyone seeking a moment's peace can go for a bit. unfortunately St. Ignacius, the area hospital, is across town from this peaceful area right in the bend of the swooping layout and is not subject to the same level of meditative peace. Iggy, as it is known to patrons and public alike, is like any other hospital but has to deal with a population unlike that of other infirmaries given the outstanding logistical circumstances involved with healing a city inhabited by super powers and mythical creatures on top of the regular ol' sick people. at the center is The Candle, which is the unofficial hub of just about everything in the city, despite the tower having no entrances or exits on the surface level. Ain's Torch is the fulcrum upon which is wrested the barrier between Galaxy City and the rest of the Known Universe (mostly Earth though) and to get thru the portal-y thing, you have to be pretty heavily licensed and checked out and escorted underground to the doorway to get in or out...
if this sounds convoluted or confusing, i apologize. please ask questions, since every thought thinked contributes to the City! this post is already crazy long, so I'll save history and culture for later.
Ainslight guide you!
